With the season quickly closing in, the Aurora girls wrestling team took home 7th place in the Central Conference Tournament at Crete on February 1st. Some notable matches included senior Aubrie Beed placing third in her bracket, senior Briana Onnen got 4th, and freshman Sherly Gonzalez took home 3rd place.
“We’ve gone through some tough tournaments,” said Gonzalez. Speaking of her experience and how the team has progressed throughout the season. Gonzalez has been wrestling varsity as a start to her high school career.
“As a freshman competing for varsity, I think that it’s tougher and more intense competition than I had anticipated, and I think it has prepared me a lot for what is to come for the rest of the season and even the next three years,” she said.
Within the nine teams competing that were dispersed throughout eight weight classes, the Lady Huskies had some tough battles according to the freshman and felt that they persevered through the struggle. “Whether we won or lost a match, I think it makes us better for what we have coming.” The team is considering conference as a preview to find out what districts holds in store for the team, as well as individuals.
They brought eight girls to compete and five of them brought home a medal. This is bringing hope and motivation to do well at districts and state too. Gonzalez scored the most points for them - coming in with a total of 18.
With state come up at full speed ahead, they are preparing in practice by working on defensive moves and staying conditioned just in case they have to go over three periods. The girls have faced many challenges and obstacles throughout the season to get them to where they are now with no signs of stopping until they win.
They are hoping to take many girls to the state meet in a couple of weeks. The Nebraska State Girls’ Championship Tournament will take place over the course of three days - Feb 18, 19, and 20 at The CHI Health Center in Omaha.
