The Aurora Lady Huskies basketball team beat Hastings High in Tuesday’s neck-to-neck game.

“ I would say it was a memorable game. It was so close and we worked hard for that win. I think we all came together as a team to finally beat Hastings,” junior Kenna Merrihew said.

The Huskies won the close game 48-45.

“I love the competition and the tension competing in close games creates. Although nerve-racking, being able to lean on my teammates and come out with wins in those situations is such a fun part about basketball,” senior Adi Fahrnbruch said.

At the end of the first quarter, the Huskies led by seven points. Freshman Kaitlyn Staehr

led the team with ten rebounds and three blocks. The second quarter ended with a 28-21 lead from the Huskies. Kendal Wineteer led the team with three offensive rebounds for the game. Freshman Hailey Hoff put up 13 points in the Hastings game. Kenna Merrihew put up ten points over the four quarters.

“Being one of the leading scorers comes with a little pressure, but I couldn’t do it without my teammates. It takes everyone to make plays happen, so it's a cool feeling when we can all work together to make big plays,” Merrihew said.

In the third quarter, the Huskies scored 13 points, while the Hastings Tigers scored twelve, putting on a nail-biting show. In the last quarter, the Huskies only scored 7 points. Though the Tigers quickly closed the gap, their 12 points were still not enough to win.

The win against Hastings brings the Huskies to a 6-5 with a four-game winning streak.

“I see improvements every day in practice. From the way we practice as a team and our chemistry to different fundamentals we learn in practice, I see small changes every day that make big differences on the court,” Fahrnbruch said. She added that she can’t wait for the season ahead and sees great potential with this year's team. She said she hopes the team ends with many of their goals accomplished, one being ending with a winning record.
