Aurora's marching band earned the top rating possible, a superior at the State Bandmasters Association State Marching Competition. Along with 24 schools,  Aurora marched on Kearney High’s field on Saturday, Oct. 21. Marching bands from all over the state appeared at the competition. Aurora’s marching band is led by drum majors senior, Emilia Huls and junior, Jorja Pohlmeier.

“Going into state we knew that it was our last shot to do our best and by putting our show out there it was exciting to see what we accomplished when we heard we got a superior,” sophomore Savanna James said.

Mr. Sodomka, Mrs. Metzger, and Mrs. Kelsey are the teachers and volunteers that put in their time to make the show come to life. In the class B division Aurora has worked hard to receive superior ratings at all competitions in the 2023 season with their Star Trek inspired show.

Aurora band students practiced every day throughout the marching season starting at 7:30 a.m. on some days and ending at 9:05 a.m. These students even participate in band camp for preparation for their season.

“It is very beneficial to have band camp before school starts since it is five days of hard work where we get to learn the music, charts, and fundamentals. Also it helps to have the dedication when we have the mind set to continue to work harder and not settle,” sophomore band member Savanna James said.

Aurora competed at three competitions this year, including Columbus, Harvest of Harmony and NSBA at Kearney. They were awarded superior ratings at every one.

“I think it was a great season and we saw a crazy amount of improvement between the Columbus Competition and State. It is really cool to get to see how we all come together to put in the work and make a show that we create throughout the season. It is exciting to see how it impacts audience members.” Savanna said.
