The one-act play at Aurora High School has begun preparations for the upcoming season, having their first full rehearsal on Aug. 28.

This year’s play, “Riders to the Sea,” is a tragedy set in early twentieth century Ireland with five principal roles, played by seniors Ansley Harvey, Sam Elge, Kim Evans, Atticus Miller and junior Jorja Pohlmeier. In addition to the five main speaking roles, there are 22 students cast in the ensemble as both living and dead characters. A musical arrangement entitled “Bones in the Ocean,” written by senior and ensemble captain Ryan Jonhson, will help to elevate the poignant emotions conveyed by the actors.

This year, there are two cast captains: seniors Ansley Harvey and Sam Elge. As well as being in charge of the cast, Ansley said that one of her largest responsibilities is being a role model to

the other actors. She also acts as an intermediary between the cast and co-director Mrs. Haynes, relaying any concerns or ideas on how to improve the play.

Along with performing well at competitions and winning acting awards, Mrs. Haynes said she wants to be able to produce a play that makes a lasting impression on the audience.

“The number one goal is always to tell a story that is entertaining or is touching to the

audience- something that the audience can empathize with,” she said.

Ansley said she agrees with this sentiment, and hopes that she and the other members of the cast will be able to project the necessary emotions.

“I think that this play is meant to evoke melancholy and sorrow, but also hope,” Ansley said.

The first competition date is currently set for Nov. 9 at Cozad, with a public performance slated for Nov. 27 at the Aurora Middle School theater.
