6th Grade INVENTURE DAY

On Tuesday, March 30th, the Aurora 6th graders learned all about what it means to be an entrepreneur by attending "Inventure Day", sponsored by the Hamilton County Extension Office. Students began the day by being split into small groups which were then paired with a business leader from around  Hamilton County. Each group was then given a small "widget" and were asked to brainstorm, create,    advertise, and market a brand new product. Groups turned the widgets into water filters, bike tires,  rescue rafts, solar chargers, and more! After attending short sessions on finding a target audience, creating a brand, and financing a business, teams worked together to creatively put together a "quick pitch" presentation. Finally, students had to sell their product . . . . Shark Tank style . . .to a panel of judges. After much deliberation, champion teams were named and "fan favorites" were announced. It was a great day, and we are so thankful for Deb Fahrnbruch, the Hamilton County Extension Office, and the many business leaders who took time out of their day to be with us! Be looking for these young entrepreneurs to be making some creative new business in the future!!

6th GRADE FIELD TRIP

On Friday, May 4th, the AMS 6th grade class had the opportunity to experience an excellent field trip right in our own community! Beginning at 8:30am, students loaded busses ready to spend the day watching history come alive at The Plainsman Museum. Once we arrived, we rotated through seven stations led by museum and community volunteers. At each station, students enjoyed specific activities. For example, they toured the various museum buildings, made butter, learned about agriculture in Hamilton County, and visited the Bates House and One-Room School.

In the afternoon, the focus changed from history to science, as we traveled to the Edgerton Science Museum. Classes were divided into three groups and spent time both in the “Explore Zone” and in various demonstrations.  Our demonstration was based on the science of sound and Doc Edgerton's strobe light. Both were excellent and gave sixth graders a chance to participate!

After this fun day, the 6th grade team would like to send a big thanks to everyone who helped make this day a success! We especially appreciate Tina Larsen, Mary Molliconi, the staff and volunteers at both museums for inviting us to visit, and for sharing their time and expertise!

7TH GRADE FIELD TRIP

On Friday, April 16th, the Aurora 7th graders traveled to The Archway Museum in Kearney, Nebraska. Despite the cold, wind, rain and snow it was still a fantastic day full of learning for all. Two TNT groups were paired together for the day, where they rotated through four different stations. One station was bingo of native animal species. Another     station was a tour of a sod house. Students were able to see what it was like to live in a sod house as well as discuss how life as a teenager would have been different. Seventh graders watched a couple of videos about life on the     Oregon Trail.  The final part of the field trip was the main exhibit of the Archway Museum. Each student listened  to the story of westward expansion. Lastly, a BIG thank you to our parent volunteers who helped us throughout the day

7TH GRADE GREEK OLYMPICS

On Friday, April 23 the 7th graders competed in the Greek Olympics.  In all of the student’s core classes they have been studying various topics relating to the history and culture of Greece.  The Olympics was a fun way for the students to finish up their Greek unit.  All students competed in three events that mimic events from the real Olympics which originated in Greece.  They chose from the sprint, marathon, chariot race, discus, hammer throw, long jump, high jump, javelin, and archery.  The 7th graders used much safer alternatives, such as pool noodles for javelins, foam balls for hammers, and toy bows and arrows.  This year’s event was won by Athens which was led by Mrs. Dummer!  The 7th grade staff would especially like to thank all of the   other staff members and the parent volunteers that helped with the Olympics!  We would not be able to run all of the events without their assistance.
